Hi. My name is Laura Scheuerell. Welcome to my website.

Creating art is pretty much the way I process my life. Whether it is a series of work or an individual piece, collage, painting, drawing, cartoon or sketch, it all comes down to doing it often. I have an on-going notebook that I write in. It involves everything from lists, sayings, ideas, notes, or anything I am studying. I write freely and then go back and make headings or keywords and marker them in color, imposing order loosely. I work in my kitchen at a desk which is perfect for me. When I am ready to take a break from writing or painting, I switch over to the kitchen world, prepping for a stew or soup. Some of the ideas I have investigated came from working in catering and restaurants during most of my teens and twenties, and later in my home life. It has showed up in my art as a result.

I developed a series around the concept of Change in my life and other’s lives around me.  I found there were many ways of thinking about how change is possible in one's life. For example, change your thinking, your weight, your zip code, your habits, etc.

I did a series on love and belonging, and one on sketchbook ideas as a starting point. Most of my work comes from my life, and how I perceive things. They may change over time.

Last year I went with my husband Casey on a trip to Brazil. He is a musician (drummer) and was on sabbatical as a Professor from Berklee College of Music. We went for 6 weeks in search of musical styles and first hand knowledge. We experienced local samba, jazz and regional musicians. Casey played street festivals, nightclubs, taught in school, colleges, university and privately, I drew in a journal and painted. We made friends in spite of our lacking knowledge of Portugeuse, happily ate the local food, soaked in the musical culture and danced the rhythms of the streets. It was profoundly life altering and I am grateful for the opportunity.

I'm an artist who also likes to write. I have spent most of my life making art and guiding people through it. I have a sense of humor and am currently enrolled in Boston's premiere comedy school IMPROVBOSTON on a scholarship for sketch writing. I find humor translates over very often into my art.

I believe art records impressions, marks special moments or inner thoughts, expresses some sentiment or belief or ushers a viewer into an alternate space.
